🧠 It’s Not About Talent - Here’s What They Have That You Don’t

Last week, I posted a video on YouTube about the "Best & Worst Income Streams For Music Artists in 2025".

video preview

Most viewers received the video as I wanted to:

But I knew it was going to be a controversial video that some people might not fully understand.

Some of the comments included thoughts such as:

"The emphasis on music, when it's not all music related."

This is an extremely common limiting beliefs that holds most of you from actual making a living from your music passion.

Which is what I want to address today.

Are all income streams related to music?

I don't know exactly which "income streams" this person was referring to but my guess is (from hearing this complaint a thousand times in the past) that they were referring to things like:

  • 1:1 coaching/mentorship
  • Brand deals
  • Online courses
  • Communities
  • etc...

Usually, this narrow-minded thinking stems from attaching your value or worth directly to your own music.

This is when it hurts your goals.

  • When I do a 1:1 coaching session on music production, I teach music, we talk music for the whole hour.
  • When I work with a brand, I either make music using their products or make music for them (aka a sample pack, a demo track etc...). Again, I make music.
  • When you run a community, you usually show behind the scenes of your production, how you made your songs, give more tips etc... all music related to me.
  • When you release an online course, you teach your music knowledge. Once again, music.

Maybe he was referring to merch? Digital products?

No matter what they were referring to, it ALWAYS ties back to your music in a way.

If you stay stuck in the idea that your income (or worth) have to come straight from your music itself (aka streaming royalties or services), it is going to hurt you in the long run.

Every music artists needs to diversify.

Here are some famous examples to drive it home:

β†’ Martin Garrix sells merchandise
β†’ Kygo has an online course
β†’ Jacob Collier runs a Patreon community

Does that make them less of legit music artists? Absolutely not!

So why shouldn't it apply to you or me?

Now don't get me wrong, it's completely fine if what YOU want is to make money that comes directly from your music.

But in my experience and from what I've seen with other successful music artists, they all have other sources of income to make a full-time living.

As long as it doesn't hurt your goals, I'm fine with it!

But if it does, I hope this email helps you expand your mindset :)
